KHUTZEYMATEEN...
Experience an exciting boat excursion to view grizzly and black bears in their summer habitat in the Khutzeymateen (pronounced KOOT-suh-mah-teen) Grizzly Bear Sanctuary. The Khutzeymateen is about 1 ½ hours from Prince Rupert (28 miles north of Prince Rupert and 30 miles South of Alaska). Rugged coast mountains, ancient rain forest, and diverse river valley ecosystems fill the sanctuary's 45,000 hectares, providing a home to one of the highest concentrations of Grizzly bears in
North America. The Khutzeymateen is North America's first officially designated Grizzly sanctuary. This tour is designed to provide you with the utmost in safety, without intruding on the bears' natural activities. The tour departs from Prince Rupert and on the journey north you will cruise past two First Nation villages, Metlakatla and Port Simpson. Your Skipper and Guide will provide a commentary on the villages as well as the marine environment. Keep your eyes open for sea birds and eagles. Once in the Khutzeymateen Inlet we will introduce you to the Grizzly Bears in their natural and protected surroundings. Then enjoy a relaxing cruise back to Prince Rupert.
